Welcome to the Urban-Reeducation

Our mission is to empower youth through empathetic guidance and support, fostering resilience (Growth during personal storms) and inspiring positive change in their lives. We focus on providing a safe space for self-expression, personal growth, and community engagement, ultimately guiding young individuals toward a brighter and more community minded future.

Urban Reeducation: Rooted in Experience, Built for Impact

Urban Re-education may be a newly formalized organization, but the heart of our mission has been beating strong for over 40 years through dedicated mentorship, community engagement, and lived experience. Founded by Coach Darren Salter, whose deep, personal connection to the inner-city experience drives everything we do, our work is a continuation of decades spent guiding, empowering, and advocating for youth who too often go unheard.

Community Partnerships

We’ve already begun partnerships with organizations like Grove Phi Groove SFI (WVSUA Chapter) and Promise Neighborhood, and we’re actively seeking schools and community partners who share our passion for uplifting inner-city youth.

“When it is all said and done, if I have touched one life…then I have lived!”

Coach Salter – Mentor, Visionary, and Founder

Urban Re-education was born from lived experience, resilience, and a deep passion for change. Its founder, Darren Salter known to many simply as Coach—grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey, where he faced the very struggles that countless inner-city youth encounter every day. Rather than be defined by adversity, Coach used it as fuel to transform his life—and now, to transform the lives of others.

His firsthand journey through hardship, silenced voices, and overlooked potential gives him a unique and powerful perspective. Coach doesn’t just understand the challenges students face—he’s lived them. That’s what makes him the right person to lead this movement: not just as an advocate, but as proof of what’s possible when students are truly seen, heard, and supported.

Meet Sherry Salter | Educator, Innovator, and Co-Founder

With nearly two decades of hands-on experience in the classroom, Sherry Salter brings a deep passion for student growth and academic equity to Urban Re-education. Her journey began in 2005 at UC TEAMS Charter School, where she quickly became a trusted and versatile educator, teaching everything from 5th grade to 12th-grade African American Literature, PE/Health, Chemistry, and co-teaching middle school ELA. Sherry earned her Master’s in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University in 2010 and has since become a key advocate for differentiated learning.

Today, she works alongside her husband and lifelong friend, Darren Salter, to develop individualized education plans that truly reflect each child’s needs and strengths. Sherry brings care, creativity, and commitment to everything she does—making her a vital force in our mission to uplift inner-city youth through reimagined education.

“Reeducation is a state of mind.”

We focus on breaking down barriers, building leadership, and empowering change–one family, one story at a time.
